The finale to a wonderful season 2 of Supergirl is only days away and we’ve got a few theories (or rather “educated guesses”) on what might happen.
- Phantom of the Op-Rhea?
Obviously this website is called “KaraAndMonEl.com” so it’s only right we start with the space puppies. We know that it’s going to be an emotional finale, we’ve been warned to “grab our Kleenexes” and I think all Karamel’s at this point are guessing that suggestion was made to us. The Phantom Zone was also mentioned in 2X21 and at this point we’d be pretty surprised if Mon wasn’t going to end up there. We do wonder if he'll go alone though, perhaps Rhea will end up there too? That would certainly make it harder to get him out.
It’s highly likely that Mon-El’s fate is the cliff-hanger that will take us into season 3, so let us just hope we’re not hanging for too long. For ours and Kara’s sake.
- I love you?
Since Mon-El told Kara he loved her in 2X16 we’ve all been waiting patiently for Kara to reciprocate. It’s pretty obvious she does feel the same way… but it’s also Kara Danvers. She “doesn’t like being vulnerable” – and she’s certainly never told anyone other than a family member that she loves them before – so these words will mean a lot when they’re eventually said. It’s been heavily teased that she will say it. In 2X17 we got an emotional “I can’t lose him”, in 2X20 the writers trolled us by opening the show with Kara saying “I love him”… about Justin Timberlake. It is now canon that she loves him, after she told Cat, but we all need her to say it to his face. We predict this will happen in the finale (but we doubt it will be under happy circumstances).
- Dying to know
We don’t think every character is leaving 2X22 alive. An emotional climax, a huge war on earth, so many characters… and we mean SO many. It's been established we think Mon-El is Phantom Zone bound - but also season 3 bound, so lets look at the other possibilities.
The most likely answer is a villain. It’s the finale episode, they’ll want to wrap up the season – killing off a main villain would do that. But which one? Obviously Kara has challenged Rhea to a duel in which only one of them can survive, and as the show is called “Supergirl” we’re guessing it’s Kara. But for some odd reason all of us are in agreement that Rhea seems safe - we think she’ll leave this episode… but she won’t be gone forever. Perhaps it’s because Teri has got critical acclaim for her performance, and is undoubtedly one of the most successful and convincing villains the show has ever had. So we’re placing our bets on Lillian Luthor or Hank Henshaw – which would wrap up Cadmus effectively enough (god knows where Jeremiah is though).
Another possibility is Cat – whom we know won’t be in season 3 anyway. Calista is expensive and hard to get. The show is missing something without her, but perhaps that hole would feel less big if the viewer knew she was gone for good – rather than pining for her return every few episodes. Her death would have an emotional impact on Kara - but wouldn't be killing off one of the regulars.
A lot of people also suspect James might die. He is a vigilante after all; and not a particularly popular one with the viewer. He's also had very little screen time this year. But killing James would serve very little storyline wise, if the character was to ever exit the show we guess he’d just return to Metropolis.
- Who’s the villain?
We know that the Season 3 villain is being teased in this finale. At first most assumed it was Zod. The casting for the character was released to the press and he was confirmed to be in the finale. However, it seems that Zod’s appearance isn’t particularly authentic shall we say? And putting him in the promo makes him being the “tease” even less likely. So who could it be? In terms of comics there are thousands of characters for Supergirl to fight – so we’re just going to guess from the existing ones on the show.
The most obvious is Ms Lena Luthor. She’s consistently a villain in the comics, she’s from the most notorious comic book villain lineage of all time and so much has happened to her recently that we couldn’t really blame her for going slightly dark. Maybe something else tragic will happen to her on Monday which will finally send her over the edge.
Alternatively Winn is a possibility. Winn hasn’t really done a lot this year, and for a fan favourite character his arcs have been pretty weak. Winn, like Lena, has villian lineage – and we suspect at some point Toyman Jr. may snap like his father did. Although we think 2X22 is a little too soon for it.
