Obviously this season of Supergirl hasn't been all sunshine and rainbows for Karamel fans. In fact, it has been heartbreaking. First seeing Kara in so much pain, dealing with the grief and guilt of Mon-El leaving, and then having him return 7 episodes later with a new personality and a WIFE.
Now, obviously "IT'S BEEN 7 YEARS", Mon-El apparently had no way of getting back after trying to find ways to send messages to Kara, so it's inevitable he'd move on in that time. But that doesn't mean that this marriage story line hurts any less. Regardless, it's clear Mon-El and Kara are still destined to be together. The concern and love for one another is still so apparent and as a result Supergirl fans are theorising how this Imra plot will resolve. There are a number of theories, but the most popular, with articles about it featuring on websites like comicbook.com, and videos being made by every main DCTV Youtuber, is that the "Saturnvalor" relationship is fake.
Now it may seem ridiculous, we saw Imra and Mon-El kiss, he introduced her as his "wife" and he'd have little reason (or want) to lie about that. But once you get into the theory it becomes very convincing.
This idea has it's roots in the comic book mythos. In the Legion stories, Imra Ardeen is telepathic and can not only read people's minds but implant fake memories and ideas. In one comic story Imra even uses these powers to win an election. She is also famously married to "Lightning Lad", the two having been a couple for over half a century, and having kids. For this reason people think that there's no way Saturn Girl could actually ever have married Mon-El, and that she must have used her powers to make Mon-El think they're married. But why would she do this?
Mon-El has two known weaknesses. Lead, which he's been cured of, and Kara. Kara is Mon-El's kryptonite, and that wasn't just a cheesy chat up line, he puts himself (and sometimes others) in danger because of Kara. The two's motto to one another is "as long as you're safe" and he will do anything to make sure she is. As romantic as that all sounds, this makes Mon-El a massive liability in the case that there's a mission where Kara may find herself in danger, like right now with Reign. If the Legion have come back in time to stop the world killers, or to even save Kara's life, it suits everyone to make sure Mon-El's feelings for her don't get in the way of the goal and therefore it suits the Legion to have Imra make Mon-El believe they're married, lessening the emotional attachment to Kara. It also means that under no circumstances can the two be romantically involved at this moment in time, meaning no distractions from the mission at hand.
Its too much of a coincidence that a group of Superheroes from the future have come back in time the minute world killers show up, and apparently (even though Mon-El has tried to contact this exact time for years) they don't know anything about them. Strange right? And even though they don't know who Reign is, Imra knew Kara would be okay after her fight with her. It doesn't add up.
Mon-El and Imra don't wear wedding rings. There's nothing on his body to indicate that he's married, the only sentimental things he seems to wear is Kara's necklace and a Kryptonian outline on his chest, a bit odd for a man married to someone else.
When Imra was unconscious in the DEO Kara asked Mon-El who she was. There was no reason for Mon-El at that moment not to tell Kara about his marriage. Instead he responded with "her name's Imra". Only after Imra was awake did Mon-El then tell Kara that she was his wife.
They don't seem very "coupley". In fairness to them the two have kissed once, right in front of Kara as if to make a point, and they did hug for a second after she returned from a mission, but that's really it. They might like Bon Jovi and train together but they do just seem like friends, which after working together closely for years we could assume they would be.
PSI saw inside Imra's mind but the viewer didn't. There was a strange scene where PSI lost control and made Imra see her worst fears. Unlike episode 2 where we saw what PSI was making Kara see, we didn't with Imra. But we know it effected her and that PSI looked shocked by what she saw. So what is she hiding?
The DEO team don't know what Imra can fully do. None of us do, but it's odd that they haven't asked or found out the extent of her powers. It's almost like the show is building up to a big reveal.
Maybe this theory is just wishful thinking. Like many of you, I hate that Mon-El is married, it feels so wrong. This would give us a nice clean solution, which is perhaps why it's become the theory most people are leaning on, rather than others which are more like "the marriage is arranged" or "she'll let Mon-El get back with Kara" which are more messy. But I do agree that there's some things that aren't adding up about their relationship, and that this twist does make sense and would be an interesting direction for them to go in. Karamel is still the endgame and the shows main couple, the one on one scenes with them the past three episodes just further prove that, so this marriage will end one way or another, but is it fake? We'll have to wait and see.
