When Imra was first revealed as being Mon-El’s wife I was shocked and confused. I had avoided spoilers and paid for it in a big way. Mon-El returning married was the last thing I could have imagined and I just wanted “Imra Ardeen” gone.
But since then she’s become a likeable character. She respects Kara and isn’t threatened about Kara’s feelings for Mon-El; in fact she’s understanding of them. None of this is Imra’s fault, like Kara said, this is “just three good people stuck in a really crappy situation”.
She’s also a dedicated hero herself, which I respect and I thought the team up between her, Supergirl, PSI and Livewire in 2X11 was a lot of fun to watch. Imra’s suit is one of the best on The CW shows and the actress Amy Jackson is an established star in India, it’s nice to see the show actually taking time to cast and shape iconic characters from the comics (the same goes for Brainaic 5 who I also love).
Obviously I don’t want her and Mon-El to be married, liking Imra and wanting Mon-El (a character I obviously love) to be happy, but at the same time detesting this coupling is conflicting. In a way it makes me angry, I can't understand why they'd have wasted Saturn Girl's main plot point on a unneeded love triangle. I wish that Kara and her could have teamed up without it being awkward. I wish they could have been actual friends, instead we just have painful scenes where Kara is clearly uncomfortable and hurting.
I never thought I’d say this but I think I’ll be sad when Saturn Girl does eventually depart. I'm loving the Legion and I do think they've made this season stronger. Maybe this is because I do really feel that Karamel will be endgame, and I’m so sure about that that I can’t be threatened by "Saturnvalor".
Obviously this season of Supergirl hasn't been all sunshine and rainbows for Karamel fans. In fact, it has been heartbreaking. First seeing Kara in so much pain, dealing with the grief and guilt of Mon-El leaving, and then having him return 7 episodes later with a new personality and a WIFE.
Now, obviously "IT'S BEEN 7 YEARS", Mon-El apparently had no way of getting back after trying to find ways to send messages to Kara, so it's inevitable he'd move on in that time. But that doesn't mean that this marriage story line hurts any less. Regardless, it's clear Mon-El and Kara are still destined to be together. The concern and love for one another is still so apparent and as a result Supergirl fans are theorising how this Imra plot will resolve. There are a number of theories, but the most popular, with articles about it featuring on websites like comicbook.com, and videos being made by every main DCTV Youtuber, is that the "Saturnvalor" relationship is fake.
Now it may seem ridiculous, we saw Imra and Mon-El kiss, he introduced her as his "wife" and he'd have little reason (or want) to lie about that. But once you get into the theory it becomes very convincing.
This idea has it's roots in the comic book mythos. In the Legion stories, Imra Ardeen is telepathic and can not only read people's minds but implant fake memories and ideas. In one comic story Imra even uses these powers to win an election. She is also famously married to "Lightning Lad", the two having been a couple for over half a century, and having kids. For this reason people think that there's no way Saturn Girl could actually ever have married Mon-El, and that she must have used her powers to make Mon-El think they're married. But why would she do this?
Mon-El has two known weaknesses. Lead, which he's been cured of, and Kara. Kara is Mon-El's kryptonite, and that wasn't just a cheesy chat up line, he puts himself (and sometimes others) in danger because of Kara. The two's motto to one another is "as long as you're safe" and he will do anything to make sure she is. As romantic as that all sounds, this makes Mon-El a massive liability in the case that there's a mission where Kara may find herself in danger, like right now with Reign. If the Legion have come back in time to stop the world killers, or to even save Kara's life, it suits everyone to make sure Mon-El's feelings for her don't get in the way of the goal and therefore it suits the Legion to have Imra make Mon-El believe they're married, lessening the emotional attachment to Kara. It also means that under no circumstances can the two be romantically involved at this moment in time, meaning no distractions from the mission at hand.
Its too much of a coincidence that a group of Superheroes from the future have come back in time the minute world killers show up, and apparently (even though Mon-El has tried to contact this exact time for years) they don't know anything about them. Strange right? And even though they don't know who Reign is, Imra knew Kara would be okay after her fight with her. It doesn't add up.
Mon-El and Imra don't wear wedding rings. There's nothing on his body to indicate that he's married, the only sentimental things he seems to wear is Kara's necklace and a Kryptonian outline on his chest, a bit odd for a man married to someone else.
When Imra was unconscious in the DEO Kara asked Mon-El who she was. There was no reason for Mon-El at that moment not to tell Kara about his marriage. Instead he responded with "her name's Imra". Only after Imra was awake did Mon-El then tell Kara that she was his wife.
They don't seem very "coupley". In fairness to them the two have kissed once, right in front of Kara as if to make a point, and they did hug for a second after she returned from a mission, but that's really it. They might like Bon Jovi and train together but they do just seem like friends, which after working together closely for years we could assume they would be.
PSI saw inside Imra's mind but the viewer didn't. There was a strange scene where PSI lost control and made Imra see her worst fears. Unlike episode 2 where we saw what PSI was making Kara see, we didn't with Imra. But we know it effected her and that PSI looked shocked by what she saw. So what is she hiding?
The DEO team don't know what Imra can fully do. None of us do, but it's odd that they haven't asked or found out the extent of her powers. It's almost like the show is building up to a big reveal.
Maybe this theory is just wishful thinking. Like many of you, I hate that Mon-El is married, it feels so wrong. This would give us a nice clean solution, which is perhaps why it's become the theory most people are leaning on, rather than others which are more like "the marriage is arranged" or "she'll let Mon-El get back with Kara" which are more messy. But I do agree that there's some things that aren't adding up about their relationship, and that this twist does make sense and would be an interesting direction for them to go in. Karamel is still the endgame and the shows main couple, the one on one scenes with them the past three episodes just further prove that, so this marriage will end one way or another, but is it fake? We'll have to wait and see.
With the San Diego Comic Con panel coming up this saturday, we have a lot of Karamel questions. We know we might not get these answered this weekend, but that doesn’t stop us from needing to know. (Shoutout to Karamel’s on Tumblr for inspiring a lot of these):
1. When will Mon-El be back?
We know that Mon-El’s whereabouts is a central arc at the start of the season. We also know that Mon-El will be returning at some point. Now we need to know exactly what episode we can expect that to happen.
2. Where has Mon-El gone?
Obviously we won’t get this answered at SDCC, as we already know it’s a mystery for season 3. But we’d like at least a clue: Phantom zone? Warworld? LEGION OF SUPERHEROES?!
3. Does Kara know Mon-El was sucked into a vortex?
At the end of the final episode we saw Mon-El be sucked into (what looked like) a black hole. We also saw a tearful Kara shoot up to the sky, as if she was going up to search for him. Will Kara already know by the start of the season that Mon-El’s journey was interrupted?
4. Will Mon-El have a suit when he returns?
We’ve been expecting Mon’s suit for a while now. Winn was supposed to be making it, but we heard nothing about that in the latter half of the season. Will Mon-El return wearing his famous red super suit? Or can we expect Winn to finish sewing sometime this season? We really need SuperValor.
5. Will Mon-El be drastically different when he returns? And what does this mean for Karamel?
Will wherever Mon ended up have changed him? Will he return with memory loss, or experiences that have shaped a new personality? If this is the case, what does this mean for Kara and Mon’s relationship going forward?
6. Will there be a time jump? If so how has Kara been coping since his departure?
Last season opened with no time jump, but with Arrow and The Flash both having them, it’s safe to assume Supergirl could well do too. Which means Kara has been living life without Mon-El. How has she been dealing with his loss? Has Lena told Kara it was her and Winn who made the device (remember Lena only told Supergirl). Have Alex and the super friends been there for her? Has her career and super-heroism been impacted? Will we see a darker side to Kara Danvers?

I have been out of the fandom for a month in order to focus on my finals. But coming back in to it, looking through the tags and posts on tumblr and twitter, I’m disappointed by the amount of time the fandom is spending acknowledging hate. I’ve been a part of many ships, some with similar ship wars, and the amount of attention Karamel’s give to “anti’s” is unprecedented.
It makes the fandom a very draining and depressing place to be – which is exactly what they want. I know of many shipper who have had to take breaks or leave forever because it’s too negative, and I was tempted to too.
I love Kara. I love Mon-El. I love them because they’re so happy, and resilient despite all the horrors they have had to face in life. I would love it if this fandom could emulate that.
Why quote negativity onto Karamel timelines? What purpose does that serve other than spreading the hateful message?
Why @ an anti on a reply thread and draw more attention to their tweet when you could just leave your own comment and like the other nice ones?
Why talk about them using our tags instead of using it for positivity?
They’re taking the fun and joy out of the ship and you are letting them. You're making their voices louder too. Please ask Karamel's who engage in negative behaviour to stop. If users are being attacked and harassed encourage them to block those accounts and mute the tweets anti’s have found. If you see someone fighting dm them and ask them to stop. There is no point in arguing with them – we will not change their minds and they will not change ours – so it’s time we start ignoring it. If you see a comment like “haha take that antis” on our tags ask them to delete it. Our ship is not, and has never been, about them.
This will be the last time ship wars will be acknowledged on KaraAndMonEl.com
There are so many iconic Karamel quotes to choose from, but we’ve managed (somehow) to pick our top 10, so here goes:
10. “Today you were a little less goofus and a little more gallant”
"you noticed? I'll take it" 2X09
Not one of the deeper Karamel lines, but one that's stuck with the fandom and referenced a lot, hence it featuring on the list. Their flirting throughout this scene was adorable. Kara getting him a private joke gift in order to show him she noticed how brave he was is so extra and cute. And the fact he was shocked to get praise sums up why we love Mon-El so much. Although, we'd argue that Mon is still a goofus... but in the best possible way.
9. “you know there's one good thing about not working at Catco”
“more time with you" 2X17
In compiling this list we discovered that most of the deeper, more heartfelt lines tend to come from Mon-El; no one can argue the Daxamite has a way with words. But this just makes the occasions when Kara professes her appreciation for him even more special. This was one of them. It's important to note that Mon-El has never had anyone truly care about him before - we can't imagine what these words must have meant to him.
8. "Hi" "Hi" 2X12
Might seem like an odd one to pick, "hi" is a very common and simple word. But in the context of that scene it was so beautiful. Kara, who hates showing vulnerability, spoke for an entire 2 minutes admitting her feelings, took off her glasses and stared into Mon-El's eyes; only for him the break the silence in the most simple but wonderful way possible. And is there anything better than when Karamel whisper to one another? We don't think so.
7. “its blobbed” “way to blob babe” 2X15
Don't you just love it when Kara just goes along with his space puppyisms? And "blobbing" is probably the funniest one, and he even planted a kiss on her cheek whilst saying it.
6. ”I’m just happy… like that dopey grin, butterflies in my stomach happy… is that cheesy?”
“its like a rom com on steroids cheesy… I’m happy you’re happy” 2X16
In the words of one Melissa Benoist "i'm a fan of Kara being happy". Don't you just love how giddy she was in the entire scene? I think we all got some serious #Karamelwood vibes on this one.
5. This entire scene - 2X15
We know it's a slight cop out to put an entire scene as one "quote" but seriously, half the list would be taken up with things said here if we had to separate it all out.
1. He bought her "piping hot" potstickers 2. "you know who else does" "who" "Supergirl" OMG MARRY HIM 3. "you have so much to offer this world, so don't let Snapper or anyone else tell you differently" OMG HAVE HIS BABIES 4. "you know summin... maybe being Supergirl and having you is enough" CRYING IN THE CLUB.
4. "nothing's stopping us?"
"nope, nothing's stopping us" 2X17
This one requires no explanation, it's just iconic,
3. "As long as you’re safe” 2x17 / 2X21
Karamel have SO many parallels; from doors, to couches, to goodbyes. But this has to be one of the greatest. He chose these as the last words he said to Kara before sacrificing himself, and 4 episodes later she chose the same words in a similar circumstance. "As long as you're safe" has become Karamels way of saying goodbye, and also sums up their relationship perfectly, they'd both genuinely do anything to keep the other one out of harms way. Like Mon-El said in a quote that just missed this list "we saved each other today" - and like a Kara quote that also missed a spot, they will "every time".
2. “Who'd have thought? A boy from Daxam & a girl from Krypton, working together” 2X04
An oldie but a goldie. This really marks the start of the ship, as well as describing their dynamic perfectly. They're 2 individuals that should be enemies but have seen beyond prejudices and now "work" together. This is such a specific quote to Kara and Mon-El's relationship which is what makes it so special. Melissa even paraphrased it in an interview:
1. "your eyes were insanely blue... i mean, they always are, but they were like, like comets" 2X10
This had to be our number one. It's not only beautiful, but it's most definitely is the quote that's had the most impact with the fandom. It is referenced all the time (we're pretty sure every Karamel HD photo someone has photoshopped them surrounded by comets) it features in fan art, videos, merch, fan fic, and in so many Karamel usernames. It's even the theme for this very website.

The finale to a wonderful season 2 of Supergirl is only days away and we’ve got a few theories (or rather “educated guesses”) on what might happen.
- Phantom of the Op-Rhea?
Obviously this website is called “KaraAndMonEl.com” so it’s only right we start with the space puppies. We know that it’s going to be an emotional finale, we’ve been warned to “grab our Kleenexes” and I think all Karamel’s at this point are guessing that suggestion was made to us. The Phantom Zone was also mentioned in 2X21 and at this point we’d be pretty surprised if Mon wasn’t going to end up there. We do wonder if he'll go alone though, perhaps Rhea will end up there too? That would certainly make it harder to get him out.
It’s highly likely that Mon-El’s fate is the cliff-hanger that will take us into season 3, so let us just hope we’re not hanging for too long. For ours and Kara’s sake.
- I love you?
Since Mon-El told Kara he loved her in 2X16 we’ve all been waiting patiently for Kara to reciprocate. It’s pretty obvious she does feel the same way… but it’s also Kara Danvers. She “doesn’t like being vulnerable” – and she’s certainly never told anyone other than a family member that she loves them before – so these words will mean a lot when they’re eventually said. It’s been heavily teased that she will say it. In 2X17 we got an emotional “I can’t lose him”, in 2X20 the writers trolled us by opening the show with Kara saying “I love him”… about Justin Timberlake. It is now canon that she loves him, after she told Cat, but we all need her to say it to his face. We predict this will happen in the finale (but we doubt it will be under happy circumstances).
- Dying to know
We don’t think every character is leaving 2X22 alive. An emotional climax, a huge war on earth, so many characters… and we mean SO many. It's been established we think Mon-El is Phantom Zone bound - but also season 3 bound, so lets look at the other possibilities.
The most likely answer is a villain. It’s the finale episode, they’ll want to wrap up the season – killing off a main villain would do that. But which one? Obviously Kara has challenged Rhea to a duel in which only one of them can survive, and as the show is called “Supergirl” we’re guessing it’s Kara. But for some odd reason all of us are in agreement that Rhea seems safe - we think she’ll leave this episode… but she won’t be gone forever. Perhaps it’s because Teri has got critical acclaim for her performance, and is undoubtedly one of the most successful and convincing villains the show has ever had. So we’re placing our bets on Lillian Luthor or Hank Henshaw – which would wrap up Cadmus effectively enough (god knows where Jeremiah is though).
Another possibility is Cat – whom we know won’t be in season 3 anyway. Calista is expensive and hard to get. The show is missing something without her, but perhaps that hole would feel less big if the viewer knew she was gone for good – rather than pining for her return every few episodes. Her death would have an emotional impact on Kara - but wouldn't be killing off one of the regulars.
A lot of people also suspect James might die. He is a vigilante after all; and not a particularly popular one with the viewer. He's also had very little screen time this year. But killing James would serve very little storyline wise, if the character was to ever exit the show we guess he’d just return to Metropolis.
- Who’s the villain?
We know that the Season 3 villain is being teased in this finale. At first most assumed it was Zod. The casting for the character was released to the press and he was confirmed to be in the finale. However, it seems that Zod’s appearance isn’t particularly authentic shall we say? And putting him in the promo makes him being the “tease” even less likely. So who could it be? In terms of comics there are thousands of characters for Supergirl to fight – so we’re just going to guess from the existing ones on the show.
The most obvious is Ms Lena Luthor. She’s consistently a villain in the comics, she’s from the most notorious comic book villain lineage of all time and so much has happened to her recently that we couldn’t really blame her for going slightly dark. Maybe something else tragic will happen to her on Monday which will finally send her over the edge.
Alternatively Winn is a possibility. Winn hasn’t really done a lot this year, and for a fan favourite character his arcs have been pretty weak. Winn, like Lena, has villian lineage – and we suspect at some point Toyman Jr. may snap like his father did. Although we think 2X22 is a little too soon for it.
